Interview Number #1. College student
1.) When you are looking to purchase an item, what matters the most to you?
- Well I would probably have to say price. If an item is of less quality than another but has a significant decrease in price then I'm willing to get the item of less quality.
2.) What about an item like shoes. Would you be willing to pay a significantly higher price for the exact item you want as oppose to something similar but a lot cheaper?
- If I really wanted the shoes then yes, but it also depends if the item is for me or for another person. I'd definitely be wiling to pay extra for something for myself.
3.) Do you prefer online or in-person purchases more?
- Well online definitely has better deals most of the time, but if its an item that could possibly be a fake or a replica then in-person would be the way to go.
4.) What about when it comes to using cash or card?
- I like to use cash because I feel as if its harder to give someone cash than it is to swipe a card. Also, there's the proof factor that cards supply you with.
5.) How do you decide if the purchase you made is or was worth it?
-Well I always tell myself if I cant buy it twice and cant afford it, then I ask myself if I "have" to buy this item. If both are a yes then I purchase it.
6.) What about after the purchase?
- I just tell myself hey, at one point you really wanted this so yes it was worth it. Unless the product or item is far different than what was displayed, this is usually my mindset. Rarely do I return or regret buying things.
Interview #2. My mom
1.) When looking to purchase an item, what matters to you the most?
-Price for sure. Actually maybe significance, I've always thought that the gifts meaning is valued a lot more than the price to most people.
2.) What about an item like shoes. Would you be willing to pay a significantly higher price for the exact item you want as oppose to something similar but a lot cheaper?
- Not at all. If the damn thing is even the slightest in similarity, i'll choose the cheaper one any day of the week.
3.) Do you prefer online or in-person purchases more?
- In person. I like the experience of talking to people, visually and physically feeling the items I'm interested in. I like to think of shopping as one of my prominent leisure activities.
4.)What about when it comes to using cash or card?
- No preference for me. Whichever your dad will give me. Ill take pennies if it'll get me what I want.
5.) How do you decide if the purchase you made is or was worth it?
- I figure if its no value to me, it probably is too someone else. So if i don't like it I either give to someone I know, or donate it to Goodwill. No such thing as a bad purchase to me.
Interview #3. My Grandma
1.) When looking to purchase an item, what matters to you the most?
- Well if I'm purchasing something for myself I would say how useful is this item going to be for me. Im not into the flashy things, I like to buy things I need, not want. If its for someone else, I try to my best to get them exactly what they want regardless of price as long as its within reason.
2.) What about an item like shoes. Would you be willing to pay a significantly higher price for the exact item you want as oppose to something similar but a lot cheaper?
- For me no, for something like a birthday gift to one of my kids or something then i'll pay the higher price.
3.) Do you prefer online or in-person purchases more?
- I enjoy shopping in general. 10 years ago I would've preferred physically shopping over online shopping. But Im getting older and technology is such burden on making shopping easier especially around Christmas time. So I would have to say online.
4.) Do you prefer paying cash or card?
- Well since I order basically everything online i'd have to say card.
5.) How do you decide if a purchase you made was worth it? For yourself.
- As long as I find the item useful I consider it a meaningful and worthy purchase.
Summary
All in all I found that age has a huge effect or people process of purchase. The younger people are willing to pay more for style while older people pay more more meaning. The middle aged person I interviewed doesn't really care about buying the nicest brand and is doing everything thing she can to save some money. The oldest person I interviewed thinks that if the item whether is expensive or not, will be purchased by her to show meaning the the receiver of the item. If its for her then style or brand doesn't matter as much as meaning.
Hey! I liked how you interviewed people of different ages because then maybe you can market to a certain age group and find your niche! I know the professor says that it is better to interview people that aren't close to you which I agree with but I also think it is a good idea to get ideas from them because sometimes they can be the most honest with you... Or the most dishonest! haha
ReplyDeleteFor me, I would pay more for something if it was for someone else because I would really want them to like it and I would want it to be a good quality product. I do like shopping in the stores but I don't have a lot of time to go looking around so usually I do my shopping online and then if I have a specific item I want, I will go in a store to get it but I don't really browse anymore. So there is another opinion from a college student! Good post!
Hey Great post. I love the different age groups because you have different perspectives for ideas. They allow you the opportunity to know what age group(s) you could target for your product. This also allows you the opportunity to know how to make your product or service better.
